Received for publication 20 January 1967 and in revised form 7 September 1967. when renal hydrogen ion excretion was increased (ethacrynic acid). Alveolar hypoventilation did not occur when induction of similar degrees of extracellular alkalosis was accompanied by marked potassium loss and no demonstrable increase in external hydrogen loss (thiazides and aldosterone) . These observations suggest that respiratory depression does not necessarily accomp)any extracellular alkalosis but depends on the effect of the mode of induction of the alkalosis on the tissues involved in the control of ventilatioii.

Acid-base changes in milk and blood of rats in acidosis and alkalosis.
Lactating white rats (Rattus norvegicus) were subjected to metabolic and respiratory acidosis and metabolic alkalosis. Before and during the various treatments, the acid-base status of heart blood and milk was determined. Acute metabolic acidosis lowered the pH of plasma and milk; Pco(2) and bicarbonate concentrations in plasma were lowered, and in milk Pco(2) was raised and the bicarbonate con...

A retrospective study was undertaken to elucidate the changes of acid-base balance following general surgery. 2843 samples of arterial blood gas and pH determinations were obtained from 418 surgical patients before and after the operation. Before the operation, the incidence of acid-base disturbance was low, 79.5% of 190 determinations being normal in acid-base balance. During the postoperative...
متن کاملEffects of feeding on metabolism, gas transport, and acid-base balance in the bullfrog Rana catesbeiana.
Massive feeding in ectothermic vertebrates causes changes in metabolism and acid-base and respiratory parameters. Most investigations have focused on only one aspect of these complex changes, and different species have been used, making comparison among studies difficult. The purpose of the present study was, therefore, to provide an integrative study of the multiple physiological changes takin...
متن کاملThe respiratory response to chronic metabolic alkalosis and acidosis in disease.
1. The respiratory response to chronic metabolic alkalosis was defined on the basis of 182 determinations of the arterial blood pH, Pco,, HCO,concentration and Po, obtained in thirty uraemic patients undergoing chronic haemodialysis. Plasma bicarbonate concentrations, [HC03 -1, ranged from 20 to 38 mmol/l before dialysis, and were elevated by increasing the acetate content of the dialysate. 2. ...

In 1917 J. P. Peters first recognized that the ventilatory response to metabolic acidosis could be monitored by following the changes in the alveolar carbon dioxide partial pressure. In addition he showed that in stable states of acidosis there was a close relationship between alveolar Pco, and the CO, combining power of the blood. More recently technical refinements have facilitated measuremen...
